Barrington, TRAC file rail safety petition
In the wake of a 2009 Canadian National Railway freight derailment outside Rockford, the village of Barrington and the TRAC (The Regional Answer to Canadian National) Coalition have jointly filed a petition with the Pipelines and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration asking that it create rules to make tank cars carrying ethanol and crude oil more crashworthy in derailments.
Though manufacturing standards for such cars have been improved, the freight railroad industry requested that retrofits of existing cars not be required. The TRAC petition specifically calls for such retrofits. The average life span of tank cars is estimated at more than 30 years.
