Nine displaced in Elgin fire

A fire early Friday morning on Elgin’s east side displaced nine people and sent two others — including a pregnant woman — to the hospital, officials said.

The fire took place in the 400 block of Dwight Street and the first firefighters arrived on the scene at 2:01 a.m. They found heavy smoke and flames coming out the east side basement window and had the fire under control by 2:16 a.m., Elgin Police Cmdr. Glenn Theriault said.

A 3-year-old girl and a 21-year-old woman were taken to Sherman Hospital and treated for smoke inhalation. But because the woman was 35 weeks pregnant, she was later flown to Loyola University Hospital in Maywood.

The home sustained $90,000 in damage. And while the cause remains under investigation, officials say it was not suspicious in nature.

Fire crews from South Elgin assisted.
