Kids learn to dye eggs the natural way in Elgin

Submitted by Elgin Public Museum

On Saturday, April 7, the Elgin Public Museum will offer “Natural Egg Dyeing.” They will use a variety of natural dyes such as onion skins, turmeric (a spice), beets, blueberries and more. This technique comes from Native American and pioneer days when chemical dyes and the food coloring were not available. Use modern techniques such as crayons and rubber bands to complete your design.

Explore the museum while the eggs are drying. Recipes of the dyes are provided so you can try natural egg dyeing at home.

“Natural Egg Dyeing” will run from noon to 2 p.m. at the museum, 225 Grand Blvd., Lords Park. No registration is required as this is a drop-in program.

The cost is $2 for 2 eggs. For details, contact the museum at (847) 741-6655 or russell_epm@cityofelgin.org. Visit elginpublicmuseum.org.
