Whatever happened to the Golden Rule?
When I was growing up, my parents would often remind me about “The Golden Rule.” Although they did not attend church regularly, they knew about “The Golden Rule,” which says: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” I know that sounds proper and pious and is rooted in the Bible, but it could simply be said: “Treat people like you want them to treat you.”
I recently asked my 20-year-old granddaughter if she knew about “The Golden Rule” and after a hint, she told me what it was. I often wonder whatever happened to “The Golden Rule.” Perhaps it got placed in the family drawer or buried under things such as personal careers, busy work schedules, busy social activities, etc.
Perhaps our community would be a better place if we dug through that drawer, pulled out “The Golden Rule” and began to use it. Maybe, just maybe, our lawmakers would not have to spin their wheels by making new laws that probably won’t be enforced anyway or are unconstitutional; maybe, just maybe, we wouldn’t have to be concerned about placing additional police officers on the streets; or maybe, just maybe, our jails and prisons would not be filled to overflowing. It may be worth a try since most everything else seems to fail.
I wonder how I measured up yesterday and how I’ll measure up today. Who knows, if we begin to measure ourselves each day, maybe we’ll see a better community, a better future, or even a better world in which to raise our children. The decision is ours, so today let’s get out “The Golden Rule,” start measuring, and treat people like we would want them to treat us.
