Burning straw on trailer causes I-69 closure

GAS CITY, Ind. — A trailer full of straw caught fire on Interstate 69 in central Indiana, prompting police to close the highway for several hours.

The Grant County Sheriff’s Department says the fire was reported about 5 a.m. Wednesday on the highway near the town of Gas City, about midway between Indianapolis and Fort Wayne.

Aerial video from WISH and WTHR showed smoke still coming from the trailer more than two hours later and a backhoe being used to move the straw so the fire could be put out. No injuries were immediately reported.

Police were diverting traffic from I-69 at the Indiana 22 and Indiana 26 interchanges.
