Report: Groce to take over Illini basketball
John Groce, who led Ohio to the Sweet Sixteen this season, will be the new men’s basketball coach at Illinois, according to espn.com.
The website, which said multiple sources confirmed the hire, said a news conference is scheduled for today.
Groce, 40, has led the Bobcats to the tourney in two of the last three seasons. In 2010, Ohio won the MAC tournament as a No. 9 seed, then upset third-seeded Georgetown in the NCAA Tournament.
Groce has led Ohio to an 85-56 record in his four seasons. Before arriving at Ohio, he was an assistant coach at Ohio State from 2004-08, as well as an assistant at Xavier, Butler, North Carolina State and Taylor (Ind.) University.
