Some simple steps Illinois could take
Gov. Pat Quinn’s recent Illinois budget report mentions many problems, but he was weak on recommendations and solutions. One problem never mentioned is that some inept officials are kept in office, thanks to money and lazy voters. We need strong leadership to push such politicians into action and get the jobs done. Voters also have to be more aware and informed.
For years problems were ignored by our representatives, and now we see the consequences. Recall the saying that every 1000-mile walk begins with one step; let’s begin solving our problems by working one problem at a time. Pensions is the largest one and a looming disaster. It was caused by years of weak bargaining and generous benefits by politicians wanting to avoid political confrontations.
The Simpson-Bowles report outlined some common sense remedies which were never acted on by President Obama and Congress. However, states could utilize this advice. Some recommended reforms in this report should be considered by the Illinois legislators.
1. Freeze state and local payrolls for three years
2. Raise the retirement age: People live much longer, are healthier and can retire later
3. Allow pension boards to adjust employee contributions amount
4. Future state and local employees (depending on years served) should be covered by Social Security.
It is hard for politicians to combat powerful lobbies, but everyone has to grasp the fact that we cannot sustain the current costs. Financial strength is just as important as a strong military. Without money to pay for the military and manage internal affairs any government can collapse, just as did the Soviet empire and others before them.
It is time for the Illinois leadership to do their job. Those legislators who do not should be punished at the ballot box.
