Maize, Leyden win in Tennessee

Leyden’s nationally-ranked softball team was playing many miles away on Friday from the Rosemont Stadium, where it won its opening game on Wednesday against Niles West.

But the Eagles got the same winning result at the Gordonsville tournament in Cookeville, Tenn. on Friday.

Senior Morgan Maize pitched 4 innings of the five-inning contest to get a 5-3 win over Livingston County (Tenn.).

The senior right-hander (2-0) struck out 10 before being relieved by April Markowski, who went the final inning.

In its second game Friday, Leyden was tied 2-2 after 2 innings with state powerhouse Trinity Christian Academy when the game was called due to lightning and rain.

The contest will stand as a tie in the tourney.

Leyden (2-0-1) plays three more games in Gordonsville on Saturday.
