Emanuel says indicted legislator shouldn’t be on ballot

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel says he thinks the name of a state representative arrested on federal bribery charges should not be on the November ballot.

Smith won his Democratic primary race Tuesday after he was indicted earlier this month. Prosecutors accuse him of accepting $7,000 in exchange for his endorsement of what he thought was a state grant application from a day care center.

Earlier this week, Secretary of State Jesse White and Gov. Pat Quinn called for Smith to resign.
