Crash shuts down South Bend apartment building
SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Authorities say 12 people have been forced from a South Bend apartment building that was damaged when a car plowed into it.
The crash smashed in much of the front entrance of the older, two-story brick building along a city street. Police say the cause of the early Thursday crash was still under investigation and that the 26-year-old driver and a 27-year-old passenger were hospitalized with injuries.
The South Bend Tribune reports that officials closed off the street on the city’s west side because of the building’s unsafe conditions.
Amy Hill of the local Red Cross chapter says that temporary housing was found for all the building’s residents.
