Lombard Great Western Trail bridges project to begin March 26

LOMBARD, Illinois-March 26 is the projected start date for the Great Western Trail Bridges project that will occur near the intersection of Grace Street and St. Charles Road.

Three bridges will be constructed as part of the project. The goal of the project is to make users of the Great Western Trail safer and eliminate the need to cross three busy areas at the intersection of Grace Street and St. Charles Road, those being Grace Street, St. Charles Road and the Union Pacific railroad tracks.

"The project is somewhat complicated to explain but basically the three bridges will connect the trail over the areas listed above," said Paul Kuehnlenz, Civil Engineer with Lombard Public Works Department.

During the construction, the Great Western Trail will be detoured between Charlotte Street and Grace Street onto Prairie Avenue. The detour will begin Monday and last for the duration of the project.

The project was awarded to D Construction, Inc. of Coal City and will be managed by the Village and the Illinois Department of Transportation.

The bridges are expected to be completed by the end of November, 2012.
