Doering’s no-hitter paces unbeaten Fremd
Senior Rachel Doering (4-0) threw a no-hitter with 7 strikeouts and 3 walks for Fremd (6-0), which was led on offense by Mandi Matsumoto (3-for-4, 2 runs, RBI, 2 stolen bases) and Michelle Mazur (2-for-3, double, 2 runs, RBI) in a 10-0 victory over visiting Loyola in nonconference play Wednesday.
Senior Caitlin Patenaude homered for the Vikes while Leigh Farina and Sara Untiedt also doubled.
Matsumoto made a running catch for the final out of the third inning to help protect the no-hitter.
“Rachel pitched pretty well,” said Fremd coach Jim Weaver. ”You’d like to limit the walks but anytime you no-hit a lineup like Loyola (1-1) you are doing something right.”
Maine West 5, Resurection 2: Junior Ariel Valles (1-for-3 at the plate) struck out nine and gave up 2 runs for visiting Maine West while senior Caroline Baird belted a 2-run homer.
Other top hitters for the Warriors (2-2) were Renee Pond (3-for-4, 2 runs, RBI), Abbey Herling (1-for-4, 2 RBI, 1 run), Katie Fitzgerald (1-for-3, 1 run) and Brie Montmarquette (2-for-2).
“The girls really pulled together and we had a great team effort and great performance from Ariel,” said Warriors coach Amy Gonzales.
“The offense is really beginning to pick up and the girls are working together as a team. It is great when you have a strong performance for your pitcher and the offense is able to contribute.”
