Waukegan school locked down during gun scare

A Waukegan middle school was placed on lockdown Tuesday morning after a man displayed a handgun during an argument with his girlfriend near the school, according to police.

While police were responding to the area of Garden Place and New York Street for a reported domestic verbal dispute between a boyfriend and girlfriend, the woman reported the man displayed a gun, according to authorities.

Officers arriving at the scene near Webster Middle School spotted Rodrick T. Young, 23, of the 2200 block of Seminole Road, running, according to police.

Officers caught Young after a short foot chase and found a loaded Cobra .380 caliber handgun at the scene, police said.

The school was placed on lockdown for about 10 minutes until officers arrested Young, according to police.

Young, who is on parole for a previous aggravated battery to a police officer conviction, was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, police said.

The Illinois Department of Corrections issued a separate warrant for his arrest for violating that parole, according to police.

Young’s 23-year-old girlfriend was not injured.
