Missing Aurora mom, kids found safe

A 29-year-old Aurora woman and her three young sons who were missing since Feb. 15 were found safe during a traffic stop Tuesday morning in Ft. Pierce, Fla., authorities said.

Laureth “Laurie” M. May of the 200 block of Plum Street, disappeared more than a month ago, taking her three boys — Quincy Collins, 4; Oliver Collins, 2; and Spencer Collins, 1 — with her. A 17-year-old girl who was reported missing from Cicero that same day was traveling with them.

Police said May and the four others were riding in her 2001 Volvo station wagon when they were pulled over by a Florida Highway Patrol officer who apparently randomly ran the license plate while on patrol and discovered it was registered to a missing person.

Police said it appears all five are in good health.

Aurora police spokesman Dan Ferrelli said family members are making arrangements to pick up the children. He said there are no criminal charges pending from Aurora police, who have been working with Cicero police on the investigation.

Family members earlier this month had offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to the boys' safe return.

The boys' grandmother, Tara Selman of Geneva, said at the time “we felt that it was one way to make sure that people don't forget the picture of Laurie and her three boys.”

Police had been frustrated by the lack of leads in the family's disappearance and even Selman said at the time she had no hunches about their whereabouts.

“I just cannot fathom where she could be that no one has seen her,” Selman said. “They are a noticeable little family with the three boys being so young.”

May and her sons had lived with the boys' father, who is May's fiance, in Aurora for about three years, Selman said. May and the man have been a couple for 10 years.
