Kildeer voters approve sales tax increase
Shoppers in Kildeer will be paying a little more in the near future due to voter approval Tuesday of a measure that allows the village to raise the sales tax by a half cent per dollar for road maintenance.
With all four precincts reporting, unofficial totals showed voters by a 320 to 217 tally agreed to increase the village’s portion of the sales tax by 50 percent, to 1.5 percent.
Village officials say the sales tax increase will generate an estimated $50,000 annually that will be used to keep road resurfacing and reconstruction up to date.
The increase raises the total sales tax to 7.5 percent, with the state receiving 5 percent, the Regional Transportation Authority receiving 0.75 percent and Lake County receiving 0.25 percent
Shoppers purchasing $50 worth of goods in the taxable category — such as clothing, alcohol, cosmetics, pet supplies, and dining in and carry out — will pay an additional 25 cents. The tax increase will take effect on July 1.
