17-year-old shot near Bartlett Elementary School

Bartlett Police said a teenage boy was shot near Bartlett Elementary School Tuesday night.

According to a news release, the 17-year-old male was walking westbound on Oneida Avenue near S. Eastern Avenue at about 7:30 p.m. when he was shot by a male, authorities said.

The suspect then rode a bicycle eastbound on Oneida, away from the scene, authorities said.

Authorities said Bartlett police and firefighters responded to the incident, and determined the gunshot was nonlife threatening. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital.

Nathan Henricks, who lives across the street from Bartlett Elementary School, 111 E. North Ave., said he was in his workshop when he heard about seven gunshots just before 7:30 p.m.

Henricks, 30, said he walked over to the school about two minutes later and found a teenage boy slumped over the curb in the school's parking lot near the entrance to the building with a gunshot wound.

“A neighbor had about six kids outside playing at the time,” Henricks said. “Everybody was outside when this happened. This is disgusting.”

Henricks said an ambulance responded to the scene and left with the victim, while police were searching for bullet casings.

“This is the second shooting in a month now,” he said. “I've lived in Bartlett my whole life, this stuff doesn't happen in Bartlett.”

The shooting follows an early February shooting that seriously injured a man in his early 20s at a Bartlett nightclub. Police were searching for a 23-year-old Elgin man who was wanted in connection to the shooting at Cadillac Ranch, but no warrant had been issued for his arrest. There has been no word on whether police have located the man.

The Bartlett Police Department believes the victim was targeted by the suspect and does not believe the shooting was a random act of violence.

Police do not have any suspects in custody and urge anyone with information about this case to immediately contact the Investigations Section at (630) 837-0846.
