Wisconsin man drowns while trying to rescue dog

PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, Wis. — Police say a man drowned while trying to rescue his dog from the Mississippi River in Prairie du Chien.

The man jumped into the river off St. Feriole Island Sunday afternoon to save his dog. Witnesses told police he began struggling, then disappeared under water. The witnesses called 911. The La Crosse Tribune says his body was recovered Sunday night.
