Milwaukee bars close early on St. Patrick’s Day

MILWAUKEE — St. Patrick’s Day celebrations ended prematurely in Milwaukee as bars on Water Street closed early due to fights between people who were punching and kicking each other and throwing bottles at police.

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports that taverns closed about 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

One video on YouTube shows police on foot and horseback broke up one fight near Bar Louie and Buffalo Wild Wings.

Police say they asked the taverns to close after bottles were thrown and the crowds became so large that people were gathering outside instead of going into bars.

Ashley McCormick, a general manager at Bar Louie, estimates the bar lost about $5,000 in revenue by closing early.

Bars also shut down early last St. Patrick’s Day after a 25-year-old was shot outside a bar.
