Federal judge in Chicago dies
A statement from the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois says Judge William J. Hibbler died Monday morning at age 65 after an unspecified illness.
In the statement, Chief Judge James Holderman says Hibbler had been ill for some time but had begun to recover. And so Holderman says his colleague’s death was “unexpected.”
Hibbler was one of three African-Americans serving as a U.S. district judge in Chicago.
Born in Kennedy, Alabama, Hibbler graduated from St. Mel High School in Chicago and went on to study at the University of Illinois. He graduated from DePaul University Law School in 1973.
Then-President Bill Clinton nominated Hibbler to the federal bench in 1999, and he was sworn in later that year.
