Health briefs: Heart to Heart and Oral Cancer Awareness
Ÿ Edward Heart Hospital will host Heart to Heart, a support group for heart failure patients, their families and caregivers, from 3 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 28, in the ground floor conference room of Edward Heart Hospital, 801 S. Washington St. in Naperville.
The topic of the meeting will be “Challenges of Living with Heart Failure: Exercise to Improve Quality of Life,” presented by Emily Santona, an exercise physiologist. For more information, call (630) 646-8117.
Ÿ Northwest Community Hospital is holding a free joint replacement seminar from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, March 29, in the hospital auditorium of Northwest Community Hospital, 800 W. Central Road in Arlington Heights.
Two orthopedic surgeons and experts in nursing and therapy will share information on the latest treatments and therapies for joint pain, including joint replacement. The doctors will explain total knee, total hip, anterior hip and the new MAKOplasty procedures.

Ÿ In conjunction with Oral Cancer Awareness Month, NorthShore University Health System will be offering free screenings from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Sunday, April 22, at the Highland Park Hospital Kellogg Cancer Center, 777 Park Ave. West.
This year approximately 37,000 people in the United States will be diagnosed with oral cancer, and it will kill one person every hour of every day. Early detection can be through a simple, painless screening done as part of a routine visit to the dentist. To register for the screening, email somercajic@northshore.org.
Ÿ Vista Health System will sponsor a seminar on the problems associated with sleep difficulties and how they can be treated. “A Good Night's Sleep” will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 18, at Vista Medical Center East, 1324 N. Sheridan Road, Waukegan. The program will be hosted by Dr. Anil Khurana, Vista's medical director for sleep disorders. Ÿ Bradley University's Center for Collaborative Brain Research will host a symposium on Friday and Saturday, March 30-31, in Peoria to explore issues of the aging brain.
Of interest to researchers, educators, counselors, exercise enthusiasts and the general public, the symposium, titled “The Spark of Living and Dying: The Aging Brain,” will feature keynote speakers from around the world, an exhibit and two performances of the stage play, “Tuesdays with Morrie.”
A two-hour presentation by Dr. John Ratey, author of “Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain,” will highlight the Saturday session in Neumiller Lecture Hall in Bradley Hall on campus. Other keynote addresses will be given by Dr. Allen and Dr. Mary Ivey, co-authors of the popular “Intentional Interviewing and Counseling,” and by Viviana Kasam, founder and president of Associazione BrainCircleItalia and organizer of BrainForum 2010 in Rome and BrainForum 2011 in Milan.
The symposium opens on Friday evening with a reception in the Hartmann Center foyer. A performance of “Tuesdays With Morrie” will follow at 8 p.m. in the Meyer Jacobs Theatre in the Hartmann Center.
The cost for the Saturday event is $20 for adults and $12 for students. The fee includes lunch and Continuing Education Units.
