Delarosa helps Round Lake throw out Woodstock
Lourdes had no mercy.
Round Lake softball catcher Lourdes Delarosa threw out three would-be base stealers and also hammered 2 hits, leading the Panthers to an 8-6 win over visiting Woodstock in the second game of the teams’ season-opening doubleheader Saturday.
Trudie Magallon came off the bench to smack a clutch RBI single to support Kristin Pierce’s complete-game victory. Pierce did not allow an earned run. She struck out eight, walked four ad yielded 3 hits.
Woodstock won the opener 13-2, as Round Lake was hurt by what coach Travin Kozel called “sloppy defense” and Woodstock’s aggressiveness on the bases.
Round Lake did get 2 hits from freshman Ashley Wegner, who “pitched through the defensive nightmare,” Kozel said.
Cary-Grove 6, Carmel 3: The visiting Corsairs fell behind 6-0 after two innings in their season opener and never recovered.
Sophomore Nicole Bitter threw 4 scoreless innings in relief, striking out two and allowing 2 hits. Senior Madeline Felipez had a 2-run double in Carmel’s 3-run seventh. Sophomore Erin Pauly, who drew a walk earlier in the game, singled in the seventh and scored.
