And then they came for me

And then they came for me

I agree with Kathleen Parker that Rush Limbaugh is an embarrassment to Republicans with his foul mouth and mud slinging toward Sandra Fluke, in the same way that Bill Maher was an embarrassment to Democrats when he used vulgar words to describe Sarah Palin and to this day refuses to apologize to her.

In the meantime, both men are a distraction from a frightening attack on our constitutional rights. Regardless of one’s views on contraceptives or religion in general, if we allow our own fellow citizens to lose their right to religious freedom, we may end up like Martin Niemöller, who spent seven years in Nazi concentration camps after ignoring the plight of the Jews during the Holocaust.

He wrote the following: “First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out — because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out — because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out — because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me — and there was no one left to speak for me.”
