South Elgin’s Maestranzi Class 4A 3-point champ

South Elgin junior Jake Maestranzi may stand just 5-foot-7, but today he could become the king of Illinois’ 3-point world.

Maestranzi made 11 of 15 then beat Rockford Auburn’s Fred Van Vleet 7-6 in a shootout to win the Class 4A 3-point showdown championship at the IHSA state finals at Carver Arena in Peoria Friday.

Maestranzi will now shoot for the King of the Hill title today against the winners of the three other classes.

Both Maestranzi and Van Vleet canned 11 of their 15 shots in Friday’s finals while Colin Holderman of Bradley had 7 and Hamza Zaid of Oak Lawn 6. Maestranzi then made four from one corner and three from the other while Van Vleet made three from each side in the shootout.

The other winners Maestranzi will face today include David Andrews of Gordon Tech (Class 2A), Patrick Schmelzle of Freeport Aquin (1A) and Keenan Minor of Cahokia (3A).
