Students sample careers at Rockland School fair

Submitted by Robin Kollman/District 70

Representatives of more than 20 different professions talked about their careers at Rockland School's Career Fair for grades 1-5.

Local professionals scheduled to take part included retiring Libertyville High School football Coach Kuz; veterinarian Laura Brown and her dog, Simon; Libertyville Village President Terry Weppler; Libertyville Village Administrator Kevin Bowens; Libertyville Recreation and Sports Complex Director Connie Kowal; sports photographer Steve Lundy; former Dist. 70 counselor Cathy Jackson and a companion dog, Payton; and commercial airline pilot Brett Kaiser. Other professions represented included sales, acting, chemistry, mechanical engineer, fashion design, investigator, landscaper, textile design, carpentry, hairstylist, test kitchen and culinary expert, and product development engineer.

The professionals each gave five 30-minute presentations to students between 8:25 and 11:15 a.m. at the school, 160 W. Rockland Road, Libertyville. Students between first and fifth grade chose six of the careers to learn about. Last month, a committee of teachers and parents assigned students to five careers. During the fair, the students traveled from station to station within the school.

“Every 30 minutes the halls will be filled with excitement as more than 300 students move to a new presenter,” said Rockland teacher and Career Fair coordinator Dale List.

The fair was sponsored by the Rockland Family Association.

“A study shows that by fifth grade if a student is not exposed to a career, they will not choose that career in their lifetime,” List said.
