Naperville officer injured during investigation

A Naperville police officer was injured while investigating a group of men possibly smoking cannabis in a vehicle in Naperville late Wednesday, authorities said.

Sgt. Gregg Bell of the Naperville Police Department said the officer was in the 1500 block of West. Jefferson Road at about 9:25 p.m. when he noticed three men sitting inside a parked gray Dodge Challenger.

He said the officer parked and walked over to the vehicle, and smelled cannabis coming from the car as he approached, but the driver of the vehicle put the car in drive and attempted to flee.

As the driver turned to get away, the car rolled over the foot of the officer, Bell said.

The car fled the area, Bell said, but was later spotted by a motorist heading eastbound on I-88.

The officer was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, Bell said, and was released later Wednesday.

Bell said the investigation continues into the incident, and that charges and warrants will be issued at a later time.
