Wisc. Assembly votes to halt registration at schools

MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin state Assembly has passed a bill that removes a requirement in state law that voter registration be offered to students in high schools.

The measure passed Wednesday previously passed the Senate and now heads to Gov. Scott Walker for his consideration.

Democrats argue the bill is an assault on voting rights and part of a broader Republican agenda to suppress voting among people who are more likely to support Democrats.

But Republicans say high school students have many other options for registering and it’s a burden for elections officials to offer it at the schools. They say election clerks can still offer registration at the schools if they wish, they just wouldn’t be required to do it.
