South Elgin's Maestranzi makes 3-point finals

South Elgin junior Jake Maestranzi had his 3-point shot going Thursday night.

Shooting in the IHSA's 3-Point Showdown at the state finals in Peoria, Maestranzi made 10 of 15 then survived a four-player shootout to advance to Friday's Class 4A finals.

Maestranzi, a two-time all-area selection who made 56 3-pointers during the season, tied with Oak Lawn's Hamza Zaid, Rockford Auburn's Fred Van Vleet and Schaumburg's Christian Spandiary with 10 each in Thursday's preliminary round at Carver Arena. Maestranzi then grabbed the fourth and final qualifying spot for the finals by making 3 of 10 in the shootout. Van Vleet made 8 and Zaid 6 to join Maestranzi in the finals along with Bradley's Colin Holderman, who won the Class 4A title with 11.

T.J. Adams of Huntley (9) and Matt Andres of Elgin (6) also shot in the 4A competition, while Luke Wians of Hampshire (5) competed in the Class 3A contest.

The finals for Class 3A and 4A are at 1:30 p.m. Friday. Those two winners meet the winners from Class 1A and 2A at 1:30 p.m. Saturday for the King of the Hill title.
