Lombard condo complex evacuated for high carbon monoxide levels
No one was injured but a condominium complex was evacuated when a hot water heater and boiler started producing high levels of carbon monoxide early Tuesday morning.
Lt. Frank Gallione of the Lombard Fire Department said firefighters were called to the 200 block of Fountainview Lane at 7:16 a.m. by a condo resident whose home carbon monoxide alarm was going off.
He said about a dozen residents were evacuated from three levels of the complex after tests showed carbon monoxide was in the 800 parts per million range in the unit.
He said anything above 35 parts per million is considered dangerous and those levels recorded Tuesday morning were deadly.
NICOR was called in to shut down gas to the faulty boiler unit in the condo complex, while firefighters aired the complex out.
Gallione said no one was injured and no illnesses were reported because of the high CO levels.
He said the Lombard fire marshal and building department were contacted.
He said people returned to their homes about 8:30 a.m.
