Cook County marks blood bank’s 75th anniversary
Cook County Health and Hospitals System officials are asking residents to honor the 75th anniversary of the world’s first blood bank by donating blood.
It was 1937 when Dr. Bernard Fantus developed the blood bank at Cook County Hospital. His achievement is considered a breakthrough for surgical procedures and emergency treatments.
Cook County residents can donate blood at the county’s Stroger Hospital in Chicago. On Tuesday, Cook County health officials led by hospital system CEO Dr. Ram Raju will hold an event marking the 75th anniversary of the first blood bank.
Raju will be joined by trauma surgeon Dr. Andrew Dennis and Dr. Sally Campbell-Lee of the Illinois Association of Blood Banks.
