Bald eagles mean no go for Chicago gun range
A pair of bald eagles has thwarted the Chicago Police Department’s plans for an outdoor shooting range on the city’s southeast side.
The eagles have built a large nest along the Calumet River. Their nest is near the industrial site where Chicago police have wanted to put a shooting range for years.
The bald eagle has been taken off the endangered species list, but the birds are still protected under federal law. Officials with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service say the police would have had to obtain a special permit to build a gun range so close to the nest.
But police spokeswoman Melissa Stratton says the department decided to drop its plan for a gun range after hearing about the eagles and soliciting advice from community groups.
