Lake sheriff should resign

Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran called for longtime county prosecutor Michael Mermel to be fired for making “inappropriate statements” to the media that Curran said reflected poorly on Lake County’s criminal justice system.

Mike Mermel served the people of Illinois as an assistant state’s attorney for nearly his entire professional life. No need to go over the facts of the Lake County DNA cases again. We all know about that now. But, notwithstanding that longterm public service, our sheriff called for, and got, Mr. Mermel’s resignation (retirement) as a consequence of Mr. Mermel’s “inappropriate statements”

Two people are now dead as a consequence of their incarceration in the Lake County Jail. The sheriff runs the jail. When an “officer of the deck” runs a Navy ship aground, the captain of that ship loses his/her command and career.

Will no one in authority call for the resignation of the Lake County sheriiff?
