Libertyville Little League to improve field

The Libertyville Little League is set to begin work at one of its fields at Butler Lake Park to improve safety for players and allow it to host larger events.

Groundbreaking is scheduled for Saturday at the Triple A field. The $70,000 project involves moving fences back around the home plate area and replacing dugouts.

“We're extending the playing surface behind home plate,” said Lance Schart, spokesman for the league. He added that the improvements would make the playing surface safer.

About 700 players at various age levels participate in spring and summer play, as well as a travel and challenger league.

Besides adding more space, the current at-grade dugouts will be replaced and sunken, giving spectators behind them a better view of the action.

“The primary focus is to improve the experience of the players and families,” Schart said.

The work, which is funded by the not-for-profit league, will allow for varying baseline paths and extending the field capability, Schart said.

“It will significantly expand our ability to host larger events,” he said.

The project also involves an area near the outfield for a press box. The foundation will be installed but the specific plans are still being worked out with the village.

“This is the most work we've done in four or five years,” Schart said.

The work is expected to be complete by opening day April 21.
