Algonquin rapist sentenced to 9 years
A former Algonquin man convicted of raping a woman who was seeking employment as a housekeeper has been sentenced to nine years in prison.
Andrew Spanier, 59, was charged with the crime in October 2009, after the victim reported she was assaulted while in Spanier’s home.
Spanier was found guilty of aggravated criminal sexual assault and criminal sexual assault in late April 2011, after a five-day trial. The conviction carried a sentence of between six and 30 years.
He must serve 85 percent of the sentence.
Prosecutors said Spanier ran a cleaning business and before the victim left his home to clean another residence, he offered to give the here tour of the home.
Spanier raped the victim during the tour, and evidence at the trial indicated that within days, the victim spoke with friends about the rape as well as to her physician.
Following the attack, Spanier told the victim that he felt “remorseful,” in a recorded phone conversation, adding that “some animal instinct came over” him, according to prosecutors.
He offered to pay the victim $500 during the conversation, according to prosecutors.
