Residents can stop deer culling
If you are one of many Dundee Township residents who appreciates viewing the wild beauty of deer on our open spaces, act soon or the Illinois Department of Natural Resources will replace admiration with a death sentence as they return year after year to slaughter the deer that share our community.
IDNR tries to justify spending over a million dollars a year slaughtering and testing deer on the low incidence illness, chronic wasting disease. Out of 6,734 deer tested for the disease, according to the IDNR’s 2009-2010 report, only 37 positive cases were found. Common sense dictates that since the majority of deer killed are healthy, culling is more damaging to the animals than the disease itself!
Even the Schweitzer Forest Preserve, which was generously left to Kane County for public enjoyment, with a final wish by Emily Schweitzer that the animals who lived there never be hunted, has become a place where adult and fawn alike are baited and shot. Residents who care about this betrayal of Emily’s final wish for her land can contact their Kane County Board members about the deer slaughter on our forest preserves, and that’s about all they can do.
However, we can stop the deer killing on our township open space lands. The best thing about our township government is that registered voters can actually make binding votes on what occurs on public lands.
We can vote to stop the deer slaughter on open space by attending the Dundee Township meeting at 7:30 p.m. April 10 at the Randall Oaks Golf Club meeting room, 4101 Binnie Road. Arrive at least 10 minutes early to sign up as names are checked on the registered voter list.
