Suburbia's got talent: Geneva High School senior James Bartusek
On Feb. 15, Geneva High School senior saxophonist James Bartusek was named winner of the 18- to 22-year-old category in the Union League Jazz Improvisation Competition in Chicago. He received a $1,500 cash prize.
James was also the lead alto saxophonist at the Illinois Music Educators Association All-State Music Festival (Honors Combo - Jazz Division) in Peoria in January.
"Both of these events are huge accomplishments on their own, but to receive both is truly an outstanding feat of artistry," Geneva High School band director Pat Frederick stated in a news release.
"All credit for this accomplishment must go to James. When it comes to jazz music, he is one of the most self-driven, intuitive, creative, and intelligent students I have ever known. He also has very supportive parents who have been there to back him up in all of his music endeavors."
