Where did Island Lake student get the gun?
Police are investigating where an Island Lake middle school student got his hands on a gun, which he brought loaded to Matthews Middle School yesterday. The boy had the loaded weapon in his pants pocket when questioned by two administrators who pulled him out of class. The unidentified student will be charged in juvenile court with disorderly conduct, unlawful use of a weapon and reckless conduct. Full story.
Bulls make statement in 3rd quarter
The Indiana Pacers played the role of neighborhood rival perfectly. And the Bulls rose to the occasion by outscoring them 33-13 in the third quarter and coasting to a 92-72 victory. Luol Deng led the way for the Bulls (32-8) with 20 points. Mike McGraw has the full story.
Cops: Son of DuPage County board member caught dealing cocaine
The 18-year-old son of a DuPage County Board member was charged with attempting to sell cocaine last week. Collin M. O'Shea of Lombard, the son of Patrick O'Shea, was arrested and charged as part of a monthlong investigation. “My son's contact with the legal system will undoubtedly change his life and our lives forever,” said Patrick O'Shea, adding that he and his family are “deeply saddened.” Full story.
Chicago surprised by G-8 relocation
The White House announced its plans to move the upcoming G-8 economic summit from Chicago to Camp David in Maryland but will still host the NATO summit in Chicago. The city had been planning for the summits, scheduled for mid-May, since last summer. A spokeswoman for Mayor Rahm Emanuel said a White House official called the mayor's office Monday with the news. Fatal DUI victim's sister forgives driver
The older sister of a Hanover Park girl who was killed in a drunken driving crash in 2010 told the driver of the vehicle she forgave him before he was sentenced to three years in prison. Fabian Higgins, 29, of Buffalo Grove was driving with his girlfriend Christina Schamne when he crashed causing her death. DuPage Judge Blanche Hill Fawell called Stephanie Schamne's gesture a “most amazing gift” to Higgins. Full story.
Waukegan student drowns in Lake Michigan
A 17-year-old Waukegan High School student drowned in Lake Michigan Monday afternoon after jumping off a pier at the Waukegan Yacht Club. Witnesses told police the student was walking through the parking lot alone when he began to run down the pier and eventually jumped. Police continue to investigate. Full story.
Woman's body found in Zion woods under ‘suspicious' circumstances
A middle-aged woman's body was found in a heavily wooded area last night by passers-by near the Zion Metra station. Investigators said the body showed no initial signs of trauma or violence but had been in the wooded area for “a while.” Authorities could not find an identification on the woman. Zion police are expected to release more information this morning. Full story.
Friends charged with concealing Des Plaines man's death
Three friends of a 43-year-old Des Plaines man have been charged with concealing the man's death after he collapsed in their Park Ridge apartment Saturday night. The defendants told police they found Michael A. Kelly collapsed at their front door and called 911, but the man had gone unconscious hours before in their bathroom, police said. “They just didn't want to have a speculation as to why he died in their house,” said Park Ridge Cmdr. Weather
It's warmer right now than it was most of yesterday, and it only expects to get better. It'll be about 32 degrees when you head out the door this morning, but the sun will come out and temperatures will increase to about 57 degrees before the day is done. The only problem is sustained winds of 25 mph are expected, with gusts of more than 45 mph. But, still, a great day on tap so make sure you get out and enjoy it. Full story.
Traffic
A couple of accidents are slowing things down on the tollways this morning. A crash is reported in the right hand lane of the outbound Jane Addams Tollway near Randall Road near Elgin. In addition, those of you heading into the city should be aware of a blocked entrance ramp at Roosevelt Road and I-94 because of an overturned UPS truck in the city. Full story.
