Gurnee gymnasts take first in Navy Pier meet

In the field of gymnastics it really doesn’t get much bigger than this. The Chicago Style meet hosted by the Illinois Gymnastics Institute at Navy Pier is the largest women’s gymnastics invitational meet in the world and so first place honors there really mean something.

But you don’t have to tell that to the Level 7 girl’s team from Ultimate Gymnastics of Gurnee. They are celebrating just that: a first place team finish at the prestigious Chicago Style meet. The girls beat out teams from gyms in Florida, Ohio, Michigan, Colorado and Minnesota on their way to their victory, scoring 113.825. They were also the top team on uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise.

The team benefited from huge scores from Sonte Turnage and Ella Peter in the 11 years and under age group. Sonte took gold on vault (9.55), bars (9.65) beam (9.50) and in the all-around. Her only silver medal came when her teammate Ella scored 9.775 on floor exercise to claim the top spot on the podium. Ella also added silver on beam and in the all-around and bronze on bars. In the 12-year-old age group, Emily Whitis came away with a trio of gold medals on beam, floor and in the all-around. In the same age group Ximena Gomez placed second on beam and third in the all-around.

At Level 6, Sylvia Raquel continued her successful season with first places on vault, beam and in the all-around. She was also second and floor and third on bars in the 10 and under age group. Her teammate Grace Miler scored 9.375 to win gold on floor and was second in the all-around and on bars. In the 11-year-old age group, Jessica Pasquesi scored gold on both beam and in the all-around while Leah Medenwaldt won the vault competition and was runner up on both beam and in the all-around. In the 12 and over age group, Kylie Miller’s 9.25 score on floor tied for first place.

At Level 5 there were more medals to celebrate. In the 9-years-and-under age group, Emily Isabelli came away with gold on beam and Olivia Roebuck tied for second place on both beam and floor. She also took bronze in the all-around. In the 10-year-old age group, Riley Finnegan won the beam title and placed third in the all-around while her teammate Sabrina Panlaqui won bronze on floor exercise.

At Level 9, Ally Hoyer was first on vault and third in the all-around, while at Level 8, Katie Schroeder won silver on beam and bronze on floor exercise.
