Golf outings net $150,000 for CASA
Submitted by CASA Lake County
Court Appointed Special Advocates, Vernon Hills, netted $150,000 at two Golf for a Child Invitational tournaments held June 17 and 24 at Kemper Lakes in Kildeer with primary sponsors CDW, Vernon Hills; and Lundbeck, Deerfield.
Other major golf sponsors were HP, Cisco Systems, ServiceNet, Autohaus Mercedes on the Edens, Fortune Brands and Home Security, BergerSchatz, UL, AON, vmware, ITW, Donna and Jack Greenberg, Joe Nemmers, Mickey Finn’s and Sunset Foods.
After 40 hours of training, CASA volunteers are sworn in as officers of the Lake County Juvenile Court to become advocates for abused and neglected young people. The adults make sure the helpless children have a safe home and that their many needs, such as education and healthy living, are being met.
Last year there were 1,593 new cases of child abuse in Lake County with CASA’s 215 volunteers advocating for only 557 children. More volunteers from Lake and Cook counties are needed to assist every abused child after the children appear in Juvenile Court, said Terri Zenner Greenberg, CASA executive director.
At the CDW-sponsored Invitational, Bob Berger of Glenview, a guest of CASA volunteer Susan Ardell and her husband, Miff, of Northbrook, perhaps summed up the reason all 13 CASA Lake County annual golf tournaments have been a success. He said, “It is great when you can have a fun-filled day on the course, and help kids at the same time.”
Encouraging golfers to donate money was an easy job for CASA advocate Amy Gregario of Northfield, who also recently earned the worldwide title of Mrs. International.
CASA board member Dan Brennan from Lundbeck set a CASA Lake County record in the number of miles flown to play golf in the Invitational as he went to the golf course June 24 immediately after his commercial airplane landed at O’Hare International Airport from Australia. UL’s Jerry Stricker of Hawthorn Woods is a CASA board member and avid supporter of this event and others.
Jim Lillis of Buffalo Grove, a CASA board member from CDW, used a lot of energy to make the CDW June 17 event a success; he saved some of that energy for the day of the Invitational, as his foursome were the Invitational winners.
