Young musicians invited to EYSO open house

On Sunday, March 3, the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra will hold its annual open house for prospective musicians. The open house occurs in conjunction with the EYSO Sunday rehearsals allowing visitors the opportunity to become acquainted with the rehearsal experience.

The open house will be from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Elgin Community College Arts Center, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin.

Visitors to the open house will be able to explore the many opportunities available through EYSO participation. Meet with current students and parents to learn about their experiences. Staff and conductors will be present to answer questions. Or stop by a rehearsal (visitors may respectfully come and go during rehearsal time). You also will learn about 2013-14 audition dates and requirements, and receive two free tickets to an upcoming concert.

The ESO offers focused comprehensive learning environment with concert programs created around a central theme every season. They have performed at various venues and locations, including Springfield, Ravinia, Park West, Scotland, and Atlanta. Participants will have opportunities to work and perform with world-renown musicians and music educators, and form friends with musicians from communities throughout the Chicago area.

The EYSO Honors Chamber Ensembles include the Maud Powell String Quartet, Sterling Brass Quintet, and the Hanson String Quartet. There also is a Brass Choir, and a Chamber Music Institute, which has featured individualized coaching, featured concerts, and master classes with musicians such as Midori, Yo-Yo Ma and other internationally recognized artists.

Auditions will be held from May 30 to June 2. Students who will begin fourth grade in the fall to college students may audition for a seat in one of the six ensembles. The EYSO is committed to making participation accessible to any qualified student regardless of financial need. Students have opportunities each year to earn part or all of their EYSO tuition.
