St. Edward HS in Elgin singles out alumni for hall of fame

St. Edward Central Catholic High School in Elgin recently announced the induction of two members to the St. Edward High School Hall of Fame. The induction will be held at the Greg True/Jim Biggins Hall of Fame Luncheon on Friday, Oct. 26, at Jimmy’s Charhouse in Elgin. Caitlin Childers, Class of 2007, received All State honors in girls golf while playing for St. Edward High School. In 2006, the team she led finished in 10th place. In 2006, Childers finished in fourth place in the state of Illinois as an individual player. She is a four-time girls golf varsity letter recipient and an impressive four-time girls golf MVP for the years of 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006. Childers’ team was the IHSA Golf Regional Champion in 2006 and the IHSA Golf Sectional Champion in 2006. She was the individual champion in both the regional and sectional tournaments. She was the starting point guard for St. Edward and completed on the team in 2007 that finished fifth in the state of Illinois. She was the recipient of the Daily Herald First Team All-Area Girls Basketball Award for 2007. Childers received a St. Ambrose University Golf Scholarship and played for 4 years from 2007-11. While at St. Ambrose, Childers was a four-year letter winner in girls golf. She was NAIA women’s Golf National Championship qualifier for the years of 2008, 2009, and 2010. She was also a two-time Midwest Collegiate Conference First Team All-Conference member for 2009 and 2011. She was a 2-time Midwest Collegiate Conference 1st team All-tournament member for the 2008-2009 and 2010-2011 school years.

Doug Sanders, Class of 2004, was a three-sport athlete while attending St. Edward High School. Sanders was All Conference Selection in baseball for 2003 and 2004. He received Suburban Catholic Conference Player of the Year in Baseball for the 2004 year. He was the MVP in baseball for the 2003 and 2004, while he co-captained the baseball team in 2004. He was a first-team All-Area Baseball Player the Courier News during the years of 2002, 2003 and 2004. Also, Sanders was a First Team all-area baseball player for the Daily Herald in 2002, 2003 and 2004. He was Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association Class A, All-State Selection for 2004. He completed on the American Legion Post 57 team and was the most valuable player for the 2003 team and the most valuable offensive player for 2004.

While playing football at St. Edward, Sanders was a First Team All-Area Football player for the Courier News in 2002 and 2003. He was also First Team All-Area for the Daily Herald in 2002 and 2003. Sanders was a Suburban Catholic Conference All Conference selection in football for 2002 and 2003. He was the Offensive Player of the Year — Suburban Catholic Conference in 2003. And the Daily Herald Co-Player of the year in Football for the 2003 year. He was the Chicago Sun Times All-State Selection in Football in 2003. Sanders also received the esteemed honor of Illinois High School Football Coaches Association Class 3A All-State Selection in 2003. He co-captained the Football Team in 2003 and was the Offensive MVP in 2003. Sanders also served as co-captain of the basketball team in 2004 and was a sectional qualifier in the three-point basketball shooting contest for the state of Illinois in 2004. Sanders went on to be very successful at Elgin Community College and then at Kent State University receiving numerous awards. He is currently the assistant coach for Kent State University’s baseball team.
