South Elgin plans fishing contest
Submitted by South Elgin Parks and Recreation
On Saturday, June 15, the South Elgin Parks and Recreation Department, in partnership with the FUNdation, will host its 18th annual Tuna Kahuna fishing contest at Blackhawk Park, on Blackhawk Circle, off Hobart Drive in South Elgin.
For the past 17 years, parents and grandparents have been bringing their children for this fishing experience.
The event is for children, age 15 years and younger. Kids will get a taste of fishing while at the same time; get the chance to become the big “Kahuna.” A DJ will be on site and prizes will be awarded for the largest fish in length in five different categories. They will also have food and beverages available for purchase at the food tent.
The day begins with registration at 8 a.m. and the event runs from 9 to 11 a.m. Volunteer staff will help the kids land their fish. Each child who catches a fish receives a “Catch and Release” certificate. Tuna Kahuna gives children the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and appreciate our natural resources. This is a day of learning and fun. All participants must be accompanied by an adult and need to bring their own fishing equipment and bait. The SS Minnow Bait Shop will be on-site selling bait at the event.
