NAMI reaches out to Elgin for Mental Illness Awareness Week

Submitted by NAMI Kane County North

Oct. 6-12 is Mental Illness Awareness Week. Established by the U.S. Congress in 1990, Mental Illness Awareness Week takes place during the first week of October. Its purpose is to raise awareness through education, promote early detection and reduce the stigma associated with mental illness.

NAMI Kane County North participates in this national effort. Since it was founded in 1987 in Elgin, it has offered support and education programs to families facing mental illness, and participated in advocacy efforts to improve and expand mental health services in the community. The iris, historically recognized as a symbol of hope, is NAMI Kane County North’s symbol.

Volunteers for NAMI Kane County North will be at tables near the entrances at the Jewel-Osco store on Larkin Avenue in Elgin from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, to answer questions and offer bookmarks, brochures and event schedules.

Donations received on Iris Day will be used to further program goals and to bring about a better understanding of mental illness. For more information, visit www.nami.org.
