Elgin museum to serve up ‘eggcellent’ experiments

Submitted by Elgin Public Museum

In early March, the Elgin Public Museum will offer some “EGGcellent” experiments and celebrate “Nature’s Oddities” with two programs.

Science Night: Eggs aren’t just for breakfast. On Friday, March 8, enjoy some “EGGcellent” experiments at the Elgin Public Museum’s monthly Science Night.

Explore the incredible egg by walking on eggshells, sucking an egg into a bottle, bouncing — yes bounce! — an egg like it’s a rubber ball and more. Different stations will be set up around the museum for kids and adults alike to partake in experiments and demonstrations all based on the egg.

The “Egg Heads Science Night” will run from 6 to 8 p.m. and costs $2 per person. It is free for museum members. No registration is required for this drop-in program. The Elgin Public Museum is located in Elgin’s Lords Park at 225 Grand Blvd.

PAWS: The Elgin Public Museum’s Preschool Awareness World Series celebrates “Nature’s Oddities.” From birds that only “fly” in water to beetles that catapults themselves into the air with a startling click, and boneless fish to sea creatures whose brains are in their throats and teeth are in their stomachs, the wide range of nature is truly astounding. Join the museum for PAWS in 2013 with some of Mother Nature’s oddest!

This month, help stimulate a child’s natural curiosity of the diverse world around them through stories, games, crafts, songs and museum objects all about polar bears. What could be odd about the polar bear? Well, for one thing their fur is actually not white. Children age 3-5 and their caregivers are welcome to discover more at PAWS every third Saturday of the month.

“Prowling Polar Bears” will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 16, at the museum in Elgin’s Lords Park at 225 Grand Blvd. The fee for each child is $10; members are charged $8 per child. Registration must be completed by Monday, March 11. Call (847) 741-6655, email russell_epm@cityofelgin.org, or visit www.elginpublicmuseum.org;http://www.elginpublicmuseum.org to register.

Upcoming PAWS are “Wiggly Worms” on April 20, “Perky Penguins” on May 18 and “Leggie Lobsters” on June 15. Sign up in advance!
