Eat like the rest of the world at ECC banquet for hunger relief

Submitted by ECC

Elgin Community College invites the community to a special dinner with a twist on Tuesday, Nov. 20, when it hosts the Oxfam Hunger Banquet.

The dinner begins at 6 p.m. in the Building B Community and Heritage rooms at the college, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin.

Hosted by ECC’s Rho Kappa chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society and Amnesty International, the banquet offers diners a firsthand experience on how others eat and live around the world.

The assigned seat and the meal each diner will be served will be determined by the luck of the draw in an effort to illustrate the real-life conditions of how some people are born into relative prosperity and others into poverty.

A presentation on world hunger by professor Marc Healy and guided discussion facilitated by professor David Zacker will be held during the dinner.

Tickets are $3 and can be purchased in the Phi Theta Kappa office in Student Life Office located in Building B, Room B173. Tickets also can be purchased at the door.

All proceeds will support Oxfam America, an international relief and development organization that creates lasting solutions to poverty, hunger, and injustice. For more information, call the Student Life Office at (847) 214-7370.
