Ask the plumber: These new sinks make a splash in bathroom

Q. I’m a loyal reader and could use a little help with my bathroom remodel planning. Everyone I speak with tells me that the “natural” look is in for bathrooms. I have some good ideas for the toilet, tub and shower, but need a little help with my lavatory sink. Can you please give me new ideas for a bathroom sink that will go with my natural theme?

A. The term “natural” can be a little misleading. I’ve found that natural designs in bathrooms can be set with things like lighting, materials used and larger windows. So you don’t necessarily have to have trees growing in your shower stall! It’s more of a natural mood that you set for your bathroom.

With that in mind, here are three trendy lavatory sink ideas that might fit the bill:

Ÿ Under-mount style — Glass sinks are ideal to set any mood since they can be any color and backlit with lights hidden under the sink. Some can even appear to have gentle ripples, creating a pondlike appearance.

Ÿ Wall-hung or top-mount — “Iron bell”-style sinks are very popular. These cast-iron sinks look like an upside-down bell, and resemble a flower shape. Bell sinks are smooth, gently curved and enhanced by a luminous enamel finish.

Ÿ Vessel style — “Leaf sinks” are bowl-like sinks that are shaped like a natural leaf, as if it’s floating down a lazy brook. The countertop mounting is ideal, and creates a beautiful focal point for any bathroom.

Faucet choices may be limited since most of these sinks have no “holes” for faucets. But you will have friends giving you an extra “holy moly” once they get a look at your trendy natural sink.
