Three Ultimate gymnasts shine at Florida meet

Submitted by Jane Feely

It’s a feat you’d be hard pressed to equal at the highest level of college gymnastics.

If you put three girls up on floor and, between them, their deductions total just 0.55, that is some achievement. But that’s exactly what three members of the Level 7 team from Ultimate Gymnastics managed at the recent Sanddollar Invitational Meet in Orlando, Fla.

The top score of the three went to Sonte Turnage, who scored a 9.90 with her floor routine. Her score equals the Ultimate club record for this event, held jointly by Waukegan’s Ella Peter and Lauren Feely, who is currently competing at the high school level.

Not surprisingly, Sonte won gold with her 9.90 routine in the Junior A age group, as did her teammate, Emily Whitis, in the Senior A division. Grayslake’s Lizzie Jacobs took silver with her 9.85 routine in the Junior B section.

However, the medals didn’t stop at floor. Sonte added a gold in the all-around, plus silver on vault, bars and beam. Lizzie placed second on bars and third in the all-around, and Emily came away with silver on beam and bronze on uneven bars.

As a team, the three girls placed sixth out of 22 but, not surprisingly, they were the top scoring team on floor exercise.

Members of the Level 5 and 6 teams also made the trip to Orlando. At Level 6, Gabrielle Panlaqui took first on vault and added bronze medals on beam and in the all-around in the Junior B age group. Her teammate, Kylie Miller, was second on floor and third on vault.

In the Junior A grouping, Ally Weihs placed second on vault, and in the Child A age group there was bronze for Aaliyah Humphries on bars.

At Level 5, the younger Panlaqui sister, Sabrina, had a great meet, scoring 9.65 to take first on bars in the Child B age group. She also won silver on floor and took the top spot in the all-around.

Daniella Strauss won gold on beam and placed third on floor and in the all-around, while Hannah McCue placed third on bars. The Level 5 girls placed sixth out of 23 teams at the meet.
