NATO official says Afghanistan top summit priority
The U.S. ambassador to NATO says the alliance’s upcoming summit in Chicago will be a “critical milestone” in determining the next stage of transition in Afghanistan.
Ivo Daalder’s appearance in Chicago on Thursday came as two more U.S. troops were gunned down by Afghan security forces.
Despite the attacks, the U.S. ambassador to NATO says NATO is committed to making sure Afghan forces are capable enough to take care of their own security by the end of 2014.
At last year’s summit, NATO agreed 2014 would be the year Afghan security would be turned over to the Afghan government. Daalder says NATO will definite the next transition step during the Chicago summit.
NATO leaders also will examine funding issues and how to boost the alliance’s intelligence gathering capabilities.
