Police: Woman believed to have drowned son, 3

TRAFALGAR, Ind. — Central Indiana authorities say a woman facing a preliminary murder charge in her son’s death apparently drowned the boy.

Thirty-three-year-old Amanda Smith was arrested Monday night after she placed a 911 call and told a dispatcher her son was dead.

Smith faces preliminary attempted murder charges for allegedly coming at officers with an ax after her son’s lifeless body was removed from her Trafalgar apartment. She’s being held at the Johnson County Jail.

Johnson County Sheriff Doug Cox says Smith is believed to have drowned her son. Police said Smith has a history of mental instability and has called 911 more than 200 times over last two years.

Trafalgar Police Chief Kurt Heminger told The Indianapolis Star Smith recently reported she feared she had been poisoned by a pink poodle.
