Notre Dame honors Nobel Prize-winning scholar Sen

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The University of Notre Dame plans to honor Nobel Prize-winning economist Amartya Sen for his contributions to the field of human development.

The university announced Tuesday that it will award the economist and philosopher from India the 2012 Notre Dame Award for International Human Development and Solidarity. The award by the Ford Family Program in Human Development Studies and Solidarity will be presented at a ceremony on April 17.

Sen won the 1998 Nobel Prize for economics for his work in examining the causes behind famines and other catastrophes. He is a specialist in welfare economics, the discipline that tries to establish quantitative ways of assessing quality of life.

The Rev. Robert Dowd, the program’s director, says Sen’s work puts the person at the center of the development process.
