Indiana’s Jackson Co. courthouse gets historic designation
ndiana courthouse that has stood for nearly 140 years has earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Tribune in Seymour reports the Jackson County Courthouse received the designation as part of a push to place all of Indiana’s historic courthouses on the register or in a historic district.
The designation could be a boon for efforts to obtain federal and state money to preserve the building but likely will halt efforts to expand the courthouse to meet modern space needs.
The structure was built in 1873 and extensively remodeled in 1910 after a fire.
Indiana Landmarks Vice President Mark Dollase says all of Indiana’s 85 historic courthouses are now on the national register or in a historic district.
